"Nevertheless, this certainly was the cheapest electron microscope ever paid for by a German organization for the promotion of science. "
After completing the first electron microscope in August 1933, Ruska applied for and received a six month stipend from Notgemeinschaft der Deutschen Wissenschaft of Reichsmark 100 per month to cover cost and personal expenses. He completed the instrument by the end of November and offered to return the December payment.
